Pond boat with 5hp HELP!

Featured Replies

Hey guys I have small 9ft. plastic pond boat.  It is a bass buster to be exact.  Anyways right now I have a 46lbs thrust trolling motor on it but the boat jsut moves too slow with me, my gear, and my friend in it.  I want a 5hp outboard to get me to where I want to fish and then when I get there use my trolling motor instead of using my trolling motor to get there.  Anyways does anyone have 5hp outboard like the Briggs and Stratton on their mini bass boat?  How fast does it push the boat?

Thanks Robert

I have a 96, 4hp Merc I use on a 12' jon sometimes and it pushes on plane pretty darn good with two men over 220#'s.  It's a hole lot more motor than I think I would want to put on the back of a 9' plastic.

Awesome.  I want to get on plane to be able to cross the lake but I would like to do it safely.  I want to use my boat for duck hunting as well.  I was looking for a cheap jon boat I could get with a motor but I cant seem to find one so I thought I might get 5hp outboard and put on the back of it.  How fast do you think you go in it?  10mph?

Not sure, in the little narrow river I use that boat in, (not much more than a large creek) it scoots along pretty good.  Nothing like my 9.9 or 25 on my 14' jon but it will get it up on somewhat of a plane.  Not too many places in that part of the river to really run any speed, mostly working around limbs and rocks, (that's why I use that small motor and boat there) so don't really have feel for the speed.  Sometimes even have to get out and drag it over rocks to get up into the sucker and catfish  holes we go to.

a 5hp would probably move like 10-15mph on that little plastic boat. is it rated to hold that much hp, my 12' john only hold 3hp.

lets break it down the best way i can.

you have a 46lb motor now. my buddy has a 80lb on his 17ft bass tracker and it moves the boat about 3.5mph at best loaded.

a 3hp electric outboard is about 150lb at full blast outboard so thats like 1hp=50lbs.

my 30lb pushes my 12' john like 3mph and im sure the 80 would double that to about 5-6. im sure would do 6mph and thats at less than 2hp.

now more than double that on the back of your tiny boat.

its basically like gettin 5 of your motors pushen your boat

I checked BPS, their Uncle Bucks Pond Prowler is 9 foot long and is rated for a 5 hp.  Not sure what yours is rated at, I'd suggest checking.

Awesome, mine is rated for 5hp too.  I might try finding a used Briggs motor.  If yall have one for sale please let me know.  I am located in TX.

Thanks Robert
