Broke Lightning Rod - Need a Replacement

Recommended Posts

So my Berkley Lightning Shock casting rod broke today and I'm looking for a replacement.  The lighting rod was a 6'6" MH.

I fish from shore and looking for a versatile rod.  The majority of my fishing is jigs, t-rigged plastics and chatterbaits/spinners. I will do some crankbaits and I'm still learning some of the other hard baits.  My budget is $150. So far my research has pointed me to the Dobyns Fury 703c ($110), St. Croix Mojo ($130), IROD Genesis II ($150).  Which would you choose and do you have any other recommendations?

Those are 3 solid choices. I would add a Daiwa Tatula also. Those can be found online between $100 and $110. Can't go wrong with any of those. Never owned an Irod but I have the other 3 and they are all good rods.

How did you break it?

I was snagged and I've seen videos where you bump the bottom of your rod to try to jolt the lure loose, that method has worked for me before.  Guess that's not a good way of doing it and puts some real stress on the rod.  Good thing it was a $30 rod vs a $100+ rod.  Now I have an excuse to get a new rod though. =)

I have a Daiwa Ardito travel rod that I haven't used much but used it as my replacement today.  Can't make an assessment of the rod yet.

At the moment I'm leaning towards the Dobyns.

I personally love your choices. I fish with a several Irod Genesis II rods.  Since it sounds like you want an all purpose rod check out the IRG693C ( Harold' Lone Star Special) or his longer version which is an IRG733C.

I would definitely consider a Dobyns 703C.  I fish several Dobyns and I have a friend that fishes 4 Furys.

Look at a Powell Inferno 683CEF.. I own one of the earlier Powell Max  683 CEF models. That is an amazing versatile rod. I talked to the president of Powell rods about this and he said my rod is very close to an Inferno, and that the Max 3Ds that replaced the Max rods are a bit stiffer than the original.  Go read this article. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewpowell683cxfast.html

I enjoy fishing rods from all of these brands. I find each one to be comfortable to fish with all day long, well balanced and very sensitive.
