Hows this for a Battery Charger?

Featured Replies

I went to Sears today and purchased a Battery Charger on sale. It was a closeout item and I just happened to have a  Gift card in my wallet with a balance of $21 on it. Total out of Pocket expense was $24.52. Im jazzed about it but what I need to know is if this charger will work for a trolling motor battery application. Specifications are as follows:

50 AMP Engine Start

10 AMP Fast Charge

2 Amp Slow Charge

Its fully automatic and it states on the box that its for Cars,Marine,RV,Farm Equipment,Motorcycle,Lawn Tractor and Deep Cycle Batteries.

This should work...right?

What setting do I use for the TM Battery?

No, you didn't get that good of a deal if you bought this for recharging a trolling motor battery.  Deep cycle batteries require the slow charge mode, not fast charge.  In essence you bought a 2 amp battery charger for charging your battery, I wouldn't want anything less than a ten amp and for what you spent you could've bought one.

Well I suppose its a "Universal" Charger for me,at least. Im an old car buff as well and well its always nice to have a charger for when you need it for them old cars that havent been started in a while. So other than the whole trolling motor thing,I suppose it will serve its purpose.. It beats those trips to Autozone all the time to charge a battery, yea they do it for free but those trips into town arent free as far as gas is concerned.

10 amps is 10 amps, it's nothing more than a 10 amp charger with a heavier Xformer and diodes to handle a 50 amp momentary surge that they put fancy terms on to make it look like you're really getting something.  In the 10 amp mode, it will work just fine on any flooded cell battery, deep cycle trolling or cranking.  You just can not use it on GEL or AGM's.   Just don't leave it connected after the battery is fully charged.  Plug the charger into a timer that will shut the power off to it after 10 - 12 hours so you don't have to worry about forgetting to disconnect it and you will be fine, even if it has Automatic shut off.

So what setting should I put it on? It has a switch for conventional low maintenance or maintenance free deep cycle. then it has the 50,10,2 amp setting. Where should my settings be?

10 amp and Deep Cycle/maintenance free
