Walking frogs

Featured Replies

What do you guys think are the best frogs for walking?  Go ahead and enlighten us with any experiences regarding frog action (or lack thereof) if you'd like to.

Lately, there have been a lot of "open water" frogs comin out that I haven't heard much or very specifically about:

Barinsky, Furbit, River2Sea Croaker, Cover jack...

And of course it seems everybody likes those Bronzeyes, and some the Swamp Donkeys.  I have yet to gather much specific information about their relative actions.

The spro, swamp donkey, etc. can be made to walk.  It's easier if you cut the legs down and even remove some strands.

Personally I don't fish them this way.  If I'm in open water and want to walk a bait, I'll go with a spook, or something hard and easier to hook up with.

But I love fishing hollow body frogs right in the thick stuff.  I love the sound they make when the "plop" down.  I'll let em sit, then twitch em around a little.  Much fun.

to make a hollow body frog "walk" cut the tails down a little, then cut one of them 1/2" shorter than the other.  The difference in drag created on the tails will make it "walk".

any frog is fine

i find that if you pull the skirt over farther to une side3 it will walk better

IMO, walking is not something a frog is designed to do, but something that is part of the overall frog equation.

Soft bodied frogs are made first for fishing in vegetation.  Open water action is an afterthought IMO.  When I frog fish and my bait has exited the slop area and is open water, I always walk the bait on the way back to the boat.  Sometimes, you get an extra fish here and there this way.

The Croaker from River2Sea has a built in keel.  The RI SWamp Donkey has a narrow, longer body than other frogs and a line tie that points down.  Bother of these baits have been designed with some walking in mind in open water.  The remainder of frogs, like a Bronzeye are basically flat on the bottom, but they can still be walked a bit with some practice.

The Furbit was designed around slop fishing and then swimming in open water.  The rabbit legs and the removable blade give it a different look.  They rae not bad baits.

The Basirisky is an awesome bait.  It's a slop bait with the action of a Jitterbug.  IMO this is a must have bait.

All of these baits are great frogs IMO.

Good luck in your frog search.
