'78 johnson 85 hp trim question

Featured Replies

Alright, we took out the motor to test the thermostats. They work great. Unfortunatly, we hit a stump while idleing and the trim wont go up. It goes down, not up. The trim motor will run when the switch is turned on for the up direction, so I'm thinking its the check valves, like when mine went out. Anyone know how to reset them? I looked in my manual and havent seen anything.  I already have the motor unattatched from the boat.

Might want to make sure the manual release valve is closed.  That the one in the side that you use a flat blade screwdriver through an access hole to turn.

A manual would help you identify the valves but they are going to be behind those bolt head and allen screw plugs in the valve housing.  There is no manual reset.  One could have stuck open, broke a spring or you could have blown the packing in the cylinder.
