downscan overlay... why?

Featured Replies

I'm new to most of the newer sonar technologies... just upgraded from gray scale X-85 unit to Hook 7.  The couple of times I've been on the water with the new unit I've tried the downscan over-lay feature.  It appears to me the two technologies (sonar/downscan) are covering each other up and are less detailed than viewing sonar/downscan side by side.  What am I not understanding about the overlay feature?  Is this an often used feature on today's units?  I'd take a little schooling from anyone concerning this feature.

It's my understanding that it helps paint a better picture of bottom structure than 2d sonar would alone while still using traditional sonar. I haven't played with it much but I think you can adjust the transparency of the down scan. That might help with the covering up you're talking about.

Someone else could do a do a much better job explaining the finer points.

Doesn't seem to be a practical use.

Thank you!
