Trolling Motors in the Cold

Featured Replies

I have a question for all you people with Bow mounted Trolling Motors on bassboats. I live in NH where it gets cold, real cold. I have been taking off my trolling motor in the winter and bringing it inside and remounting it in the spring. I asked the guys at the local Trolling motor repair shop and they told me it wasnt needed. The boat gets covered so it would be out of the elements. Do any of you leave your trolling motors on through the winter? The Low temps can sometimes get down to -25°F. Any input would be great.

I leave my Trolling motor mounted on the boat in an unheated barn over the winter. Never had any ill effects. There is really nothing in a trolling motor that will be affected by the cold. Unless, There is water trapped in it from a leaky seal.

I agree

I live in Pittsburgh, so cold winters too.

Both of my boats sit outside with covers on them TM mounted and have never had any problems.

there are many guys who take everything out of their boats in the winter. Store them inside.

Like batteries.

there was a post about this a few weeks ago.

I leave my batteries in the boats too. Have them hooked up to onboard chargers and leave them plugged in all winter.

I would leave my fishing gear in them too, but in the winter is when I clean, fix and organize all my gear so it comes inside.

The only thing I make sure I. Bring inside in the winter is my Fish finders/GPS everything else can stay outside covered and never have problems.

Yea I think this is the way I am gonna go from now on. Taking that off and putting it back on as well as the transducer wire that I have to rerun every spring was a pain.

You can buy removable trolling motor mounts these days that make it much easier to take one on and off.  They usually run from around $60 - 100.
