Minn Kota Modification??

Featured Replies

Hi, does anyone know how to flip the direction of the propeller on a transmount Minn Kota trolling motor? I want to make it so I can control the motor from the front of the boat. Right now if I rotate the handle towards me, the propeller is facing the opposite direction, so I need the propeller and handle to be on the same side. Is there a way to mount the propeller the other way on the shaft? Hope this makes sense!

Any info out there would be appreciated!

Thanks,

H

How is the control head mounted. If screwed, take the screws out, rotate head 180 degrees, drill new holes in the head and refasten it. I would not try to drill new holes in the shaft unless you took the head completly off, there are a bunch of wires in there you will hit with the bit and it will drop metal shavings down inside the motor.

I've done this with a very old MK but not sure how the newer ones mount.

I'm guessing they allow you to switch that around.   Take out the screws and see if you can rotate the head to see if other holes lineup.

just remove the head cover and look for the bolt that goes through the shaft and head. Remove the bolt, rotate the head and reinstall. They are setup for it from the factory. Just make sure you don't twist the wires to much. I have done this to many motors.

Note,  Opening up the head will void the warranty so please be carefull.

Just talked to Minn Kota earlier today, they told me to pull the bolt right below the head of the motor control handle. I did this, and rotated the head 180 degrees, and then replaced the bolt. Works just like it was built that way. Cant wait to hit the water.  ;D

How exactly would that void the warranty?

:-?

How does that thing float?

He shouldnt be open the head, the bolt and nut he needs to remove, is on the collar on the bottom of the head, turn 180 degrees, reinsert bolt and nut.

Cabela 90% of the time if you try any mods yourself to anything regardless of if it is a tollong motor it will void any factory warrant if they can determine work has been done to their product. Same works for cars, reels, boats. In order not to void a warranty you have to have a specific certified mechanic/serviceman perform the work. Usually staated in the warranty papers you recieve with the product if you read into them.

When I was having trouble with my Minnkota my local ASC Center told me all I could do was remove the prop to check for line.  Removing the 4 screws and lifting the cover of the head would void warranty.

Could you do me a huge favor and take a picture of the bolt? I am hoping to do this as well and really dont want to mess anything up.

great thread!

thanks for the tip

All you have to do is to reverse the wires from the trolling motor to the battery and it will spin the other way. I have it setup like this on my boat right now and it works perfectlyw

thats driving in reverse but with a higher rpm.  driving in reverse is not efficient as driving forward.

spin the thing around, plug in the wires the right way, and see how much faster and better you can control the boat.

If your motor uses resisters to control speed this will work. If it has the maximizer in it this procedure will blow the electronics.
