Wheel Berings Mishap

Featured Replies

Asking for a friend...   So neglecting some regular maintenance on his trailer has caught up to him.  He's not mechanically inclined at all, but after this will definitely be learning how to do this himself going forward.  Anyways, on to his question:

Had a wheel bearing failure going down the road.  Repair shop says he needs a new spindle, drum, and bearings on one side, need bearings re-packed on other side.  Quoted him $560 all in for parts & labor.  Just wondering if that seems to be in the ballpark of being reasonable.

Thanks, my 'friend' appreciates any input...

What type of boat is this?

Yes that sounds reasonable. A tin of grease and a grease gum would have been more reasonable. Have him go on you tube and watch some how to videos on the maintenance of the motor he has as well i imagine his motor oil and lower unit gear case lube also needs to be changed

if the bearing went out on one side I would replace the other side versus just re-packing them with grease.

wont cost anymore in labor and new grease bearings aren't that high

Welcome to boat ownership and not being able to work on them.  That's less that $100 repair for me.  Probably are reasonable quote to the cost of materials and labor involved.
