Portable livewells??

Featured Replies

I am looking for a portable livewell for my boat.  Any suggestions??  Is it possible to convert a large ice chest into a portable livewell??

most definately,, get about a 120 qt. cooler, and a aerator or live well pump, wire to your battery thru a switch, and you are good to go..

Does anybody have a diagram of this.  I need to visually see it.

Thanks for the reply FISHBEAR.

BPS sells them

Yes BPS & Cabela's sell the kits. they are $30 -$40 and work good. Just drop it in the cooler, use the suckion cups to hold the spray head on and hook the wires up to the battery. Add water and power and you have a nice livewell

Thanks for the info guys.  Just looked them up on BPS web site and will be ordering one very soon.  Thanks again.

I have had the (mis) fortune of building a number of versions of livewells for my boat over the last two years. I tried to keep it sweet and simple, but wanted to ensure that when I have 10 2+lb fish in the livewell, they would be released in great condition. I purchased a 85 litre (+-25 gal) black platic utility box and cut a hatch in the lid. I believe black keep the fish calm, but note that it gets quite hot if left in the sun.

Next I used garden hose fittings and connected 1 bilge pump (500 gal.min) for inflowing water and another which I placed inside the utility box for outgoing water. I used a normal garden hose nozzel which I fitted in the box. This creates a nice strong spray, cools and aerates when doing water changes. I then installed a 12v air pump which I keep on all day long.

Once the fish book in to my hotel, I run the inflowing and outflowing pumps every 2 hours or so for about 4 min which ensures a total water change. Have not lost a fish to date.
