trolling motor problem!!!

Featured Replies

ok i was out the other day and i ran my tmotor in to some rocks and i thought nothing about it and i little while later i noticed a kind of grinding sound coming form the bottom of the motor, it was so loud i pulled my boat out of the water and took it home. then i took the prop off then the are to bolts behind the prop i took those off then opened up the motor to take a look in side. and there are these two lead type blocks and i guess they keep the actual motor from sliding back and forth they look like they were out of place like they served no purpose i cant think of any thing that might be wrong with it besides that. i know my post probably dose not make any since but i need help ASAP i have a tourney coming up and i dont have time to get it sent off to get fixed. thanks big time travis

I may be misunderstanding, but I think the blocks you speak of could be the magnets that allow the motor to work (attached to the motor housing), if those are loose, they shouldn't be.

May have bent the shaft causing the grinding. Usually the shear pin should protect from that but apparently your pin never sheared.

Not good.

Definatley sounds like the magnets. I have never heard of this happening before. I would contact the manufacturer, I'm not sure but it might be under warranty. If not I would make a big enough stink on the phone and tell them you fish tourny's and need the motor. I don't know about Motor Guide but Minn Kota is very helpfull for us tourny guys. I had my lower unit fall off my shaft last year after hitting some rocks in the river and it stripped out the shaft. I called Minn Kota, explained everything, told them I fish alot of tournys and 3 days later I had a new shaft Fed Exed. They don't want people bad mouthing them in the tourny world, so they are usually willingto help you out.

One thing that puzzles me in your post.  You said you put the magnets back on the pins that hold them, so I have to assume you took the magnets out.  Since I've never tried to take the magnets out of a TM I'm not sure what holds them in place but I would have thought they would have been bonded to the housing like most other permenant magnet motors.  Just sitting in there one would thing the field would pull them against the armeture and have them rubbing on it.  Might want to check with one of the TM motor repair shops and see if they float like that or are suppose to be bonded,

the magnets are bonded on to the housing like you said. i thought that the brush's were magnets but there not there brushes lol.
