Got my boat back

Featured Replies

Trolling motor works fine now. They also found out the spark plugs were automotive and not marine plugs. Changed those out, so it should burn alot better now (i.e. no exhaust drip) Plus I never really ran it very long, more start the motor, move and anchor, start the motor and move etc.

The owner of the marine place was telling me I did NOT have to unplug the batteries before charging each one, but just to make sure I charged each one seperately (1 charger per battery and they could be charged at the same time.)

I guess I am being thick headed, but since this is a series circuit, wouldn't I have to unplug the leads from each battery and then charge the batteries? It's a 24v setup.

He said all I have to do is use my seperate chargers (I have 1 for each battery) hook up the respective polarities and they should be fine. Is this right???? Doesn't sound right, but again I don't know 100% hence why I am asking.

Thanks!

No matter how 12 volt batteries are connected, they are still only 12 volt batteries.  You can have 20 of them in series and still charge all of them with 20, 12 volt chargers without disconnecting anything as long each charger is only connected to the negative and positive of each individual battery.  On board chargers for 24 and 36 volt systems are not 24/36 volt chargers, they are two, three or four 12 volt chargers connected to each battery.

Makes more sense explained like that.

Thanks way!

The electricity takes the path of least resistance, so when you have the charger hooked up to each battery power flows through the battery to ground and not through the circuit.  Just be sure to attach the clips to the batteries before plugging in the charger to avoid arcing.

It's wired up correctly now. I need to add more screws to the trolling motor bracket now though because on 5 it 'bucks' the bracket pretty good. Because of where the original was we only had to drill one hole, but it's only being held down by 3 bolts. I need to add some more! lol

Engine runs great too!
