couple questions about fixing a few things on my t

Featured Replies

ok well i took my boat out saturday on hapatcong. lots of fun love the boat but theres a few things that i need to change/fix. first thing my transducers on the back are mounted to low i think. they sit about an inch below the bottom line of the transom. when im cruising the drag in the water and make 2 big continuous streams of water shoot up and out the side of the outboard. they are mounted now with screws but i think i need to move them up a little..... how do you seal the old holes and whats the best way of mounting them back on.

2nd thing is my fish finders blow ***. the front one is annoying, if i get shallow it errors out and says its like 600ft deep and sometimes locks up beside being very low resolution. the humming bird on the console locks at full speed also and its just cheepy anyway. i wanna get a eagle 320 for the front but how hard is its to pull up the decks and run the wires? never did any of this before so its all new to me. also what would be a good console electronics choice?

otherwise the boat ran great, motor starts right up and seems to run strong, i seen 20mph with 3 people, 23mph with 2 people on board.

As I remember the back transducer should be even with the bottom of the transom. I suspect with the transducer shooting a rooster tail you are not getting a bottom picture at speed. Plug the holes with some marine silicone caulkaround the screws. You might have enough adjustment so you don't need new screw holes.

The front sounder going crazy is common. Shut it off and turn it back on it will clear itself. I read somewhere why this happens but I can't remember the cause. It seems like it happens less frequently with the sounder on manual rather than automatic.

Why would you want to take up boards. The front sounder is better off to have the transducer mounted to the bottom of the trolling motor. The bottom picture you get is always behind the transducer unless you are sitting perfectly still. How far behind depends on how deep the water is and how fast you are moving.

If I remember correctly a new transducer is around $35 to $40. Not pocket change but neither is pulling up the floor an easy task. You might be able to pull the cable out but be very careful you don't get caught on something and break another wire or connection

Running in auto is what  causes one to go crazy on depth in shallow water.  The auto gain is too high and it starts picking up harmonics to it's primary echo and making it think it's in deeper water.   Run it in manual and back the gain/sensitivity down when in shallow water will fix that problem.

Not sure what your trying to do when your talking about lifting decks to run wires.  What usually works is to disconnect the Xducer from the sonar, tie a heavy nylon cord to the connector end, use some tape, and tape on both ends of the connector so it forms a bullet shape on each end, this helps to keep if from hanging, and pull the old cable out, pulling the cord with it.  Use the cord to pull the new one in.  It helps if two people do this so one can work one end and the second person work the other, somethings you both have to hold some pressure and work it to bet it them through.

Xducer should be mounted so the bottom barely sticks below the bottom of the hull.

Way2slow is correct, put everything on manual and zero out everything. Start adjusting once your on water.

Also make sure your power is not on the same battery as your trolling motor.

Your bow Xducer should be on the TM.  Other wise you are fishing something that may be 17 feet behind you depending on boat length.  The 320 will go crazy when it gets less than 1 foot of water.  Had it out Saturday for the first time and every time we got in less than a foot of water, it went berserck.

if you don't want to drill many more holes in your boat. they sell a plastic plate, BPS & Cabela's, that you put on your transom and you mount your transducers to it. So you only have to drill 2 holes in your boat and you can drill as many holes in the plate as you want.

Cabela's Transducer Mounting Plates  part # 01-0102

$12.99 ~ $31.99
