Information about 1995 Johnson 48 HP outboard

Featured Replies

I just bought a DuraCraft john boat with a 1995 Johnson 48 HP 2 stroke. Does anyone have information about this motor?

Thanks.

The 48 is the same as a 50 hp just without the VRO.  VRO stands for Variable Ration Oiler, and mixed the oil and the fuel in different amounts for the running conditions.  Many people disconnect the VRO.  Since you don't have it, or people who disconnect it, have to mix the oil and fuel.  It was easier to market it as a 48 than a 50.  They also had a 28 spl, 88 spl, I think even a 112, but ain't positive on that.

I think it is just for marketing.  Kinda sounds like a 38 spl handgun.  I think they advertised it as an 88 spl as opposed to the 90 which had VRO.
