Oil ratio question

Featured Replies

Long story short-  Bought used boat- owner told me 50:1 mix, I use 50:1 mix, download manual for motor and it says 100:1 mix.

Motor only smokes a little at first start...  Doesn't seem too rich...  Should I switch to 100:1, or should I just keep it like it is?

Are you sure you read it right, I've never seen any motor that runs 100:1 at operating rpm.  VRO units advertise up to 100:1 but the 100:1 is only at idle and it starts increasing oil as it gains rpm.  50:1 is the standard for sub 6,000 rpm motors, 40:1 for high performance motors turning over 6,000 and some go to 32:1 over 7,000 rpm.

You sound like you must be right...  I must have read it wrong.  I saw 100:1 and it must have referred to something else...  Thanks.  I'll check it again.

Do you have an older Johnson motor?  There were some older Johnson motors that recommended 100:1 ratios.  This was later revised to 50:1.

That's a big 10-4
