charging a 24v setup?

Featured Replies

sense im getting a new 24v motor im wondering how to hook up the charger to this. i have a 2 bank dual pro right now one to my current 12v trolling battery and one bank goin to my starting/acc battery.  when i get the 2nd trolling battery for the 24v system do i need to get a 3 bank charger so its 1 bank for each battery or can i run one bank and hook it up like the leads for the motor to charge both batteries in the series?

this is my idea would it work?

I had a 2 bank charger on my last boat with a 24v TM. I had both TM batteries hooked up to the charger. I didn't worry too much about the starter batter since it gets recharged when you run the big motor, which has an alternator.

I do throw my portable charger on the starter battery a couple of times during the season just to give it a really good full charging. I used that set-up for three years without a problem. On my new (used) boat, I'm doing the same thing.

i would leave the starting battery to be charged by the outboard but NJ is mostly electric only lakes so there will be times i wont run the  gas motor for a while

would this not work? i know u can charge 2 batterys in paralell from one bank i would think if you can draw power from a 24v setup for the motor it would charge the same way? am i way off

If you are not concerned with topping off the starting battery just hook each of the dual charger outputs to each of the trolling batteries.

The circuit you sketched won't work unless you have a 24 volt charger because you are charging a 24 volt battery with a 12 volt charger.  Your circuit should show two more charging leads going to the jumper between the batteries

i understand it would show 2 more leads ifi was using 2 banks for it but i was wondering if hooking it up the way i had would work.

the way you have will not work. In 24volt set up there must be pos and neg line on each battery term from the charger. you can't charge a 24 volt sysytem the way you have it drawn up.

The easiest and cheep way to dit it is.

use your 2 bank charger to charge your TM batteries. go to walmart and buy a small Black & decker auto 6 amp charger for $30. and use that to charge your starting battery. In the future get a 3 bank and it will solve eveything.

I have 3 bank in my boat, but I run a 36 volt TM, so I have my charger on my 3 tm batteries and I have that cheep B&D charger to charge my starting battery. have had no propblems at all.

yeah i guess thats what ill have to do, i have a portable charger already a real good one just wanted to see if it was possible to do this without using it

so when you charge the 2 batteries in series on there own bank, you dont need to disconnect them do you?

no, just hook each up to each bank and thats it. not need to disconnect the 24volt jumper cable. they can stay in 24volt ,the charger will figure it out and charge it with no propblem
