Fall Bite in Vermont?

Featured Replies

Hello my fellow 802er's, has the Fall bite started yet where you are? If so, what have they been hitting the most (I'm assuming topwater, crank/jerk, spinnerbait or jigs)?

Fished Champlain all weekend in a TBF semi final.  Smallies were 18-43ft.  Eating alewifes. The green jerks were as deep as 30ft.

Fished the weekend before smallies were 25-50ft...

70-80 degrees in the day and 50's at night are slowing down the fall temperature drop.  Upsize and slow down.

How about other than Champlain since I don't get to fish there...what about other smaller lakes/ponds?

I was on Champlain last weekend as well. Had tournaments on sat and sun. There are still fish shallow if you can find them. We caught quite a few 3 lb largemouth in less then 5 ft of water. Our biggest smallie which was well over 4 lbs was caught in 10 ft of water. We did well but didn't win the weekend 2 day tourney, we got 3rd. We did end up winning AOY team though. The winning team was fishing Carolina rigs both days.

Another couple weeks and the fall bite should be on. Water temps still in the 60s and even low 70s on hot calm days.

Guys are still fishing smaller waters (Shelburne Pond, Iroquois, Waterbury, Arrowhead) the same way they were this "Summer".

Biting shallow here... but, then again, there's not much 'deep' to the places I fish.

Fished Lowell Lake today and one 2.5 lb. LMB was it. Much better day catching smallies on the CT river yesterday, though. But it sure hasn't felt like there's a fall bite in effect yet on the lakes & ponds in southern VT.

Hasn't felt like fall the past couple days. Temps approaching 90 forecast for the next couple days as well. No wind and full sun has sent water temperatures skyrocketing to 80 degrees. I saw 82 yesterday at 230 pm. A few fish were still biting though. Later this week a huge cold front is pushing through dropping temps into the 60s. On Saturday a forecast of 55 degrees is expected for the high. This certainly is going to drop the water temperature and change what fish are doing. A couple weeks of cooler weather should really set up for some excellent October Fishing.
