I recently bought a 24lb Watersnake trolling motor for my Hobie Pro Angler 12 kayak. It only has 2 speeds but I plan to put a variable speed controller which will be much more effiecient by giving me ability to fine tune speed.

 

So my question is will a Vmax AGM 20ah battery be sufficient at 13lbs, or do I really need to go up to the AGM 35ah that weighs 23lbs? I fish mostly half days and lake is only a couple miles long.

Depends on how far you want to run it. I'm not sure on the AMP draw of the motor but if its 5 amp at low power the 20 AH battery would give you 4 hours of run time. If running at full power and the amp draw is 30 amps you're only going to get less than an hour and that will also really heat up the battery. Someone correct me if I am wrong. You could also parallel two 20 AH batteries but that may cost more.

 

 

Thanks, I opted for the Vmax 35ah which is way overkill for most of my needs, but having the extra size gives me a lot of options and flexibiklity should I decide I need it. Plus at only 25lbs, its not too heavy on yak.
