Class I hitch for a 14' Jon?

I'm guessing a Class I hitch is sufficient for a 14' Jon boat with 9.9 motor?  The tongue weight I'm guessing to be less than 100 pounds for my boat/trailer.  I assume the trailer/boat weighs less than 2000 lbs.

I plan to put a hitch on my Sedan to tow my boat.  Need a truck but have to wear this Sedan out first  ;D

Do I need to match the hitch on my trailer (ball size) or is everything standard.  I'm thinking my trailer may expect a Class II hitch on my car and won't match up to a Class I hitch.  I'm so new to this  ;)

A class one hitch is good up 2000 lb trailer weight. To check the tongue weight of your trailer put a bathroom scale one a milk crate or something and weight it, it will get you close. If memory serves your tongue weight shouldn't exceed 10% of the trailer weight.

You will need to check the coupler on your trailer to see what size ball the trailer requires. Then before you buy your ball mount you need to determine the height you need. That website you listed should show you how to figure the right height. As a rough guide with your trailer level the bottom of your tongue should be close to level of the ball mount. If your trailer is too low or too high it isn't real safe and it can bind up on the launch ramp.

I have a 14' boat and I pulled it on the bumper hitch of a Ranger with no problems except the bumper was too high and when I backed down the ramp the trailer tore up the bumper pad.

As for the trailer it doesn't "care" what class receiver your car has (as long as the weight ratings work out for safety of course).

Match the hitch to the trailer weight and the ball to the tongue specs and you will be good to go.

You didn't say what kind of car you had, check the owners manual to make sure you can put a hitch on it as long as you don't have a tiny car you should be ok. I couldn't even feel my trailer behind my Ranger, now I have an F150 and I can't feel it or see it!

I think my total package weighs around 600lbs I doubt yours would weight much more than that. One thing about receiver hitches, if you don't already have one moving up a class might make accessories easier to find. I have a Class One on my wife's Explorer and trying to find an 1 1/4" 3" drop hitch has been a pain. Going to a 2" receiver would make things easier but you would need to make sure you didn't pull more than your car can handle and if you sold the car I would take it off. If you were going to have a shop install the receiver I don't know if they would give you any trouble about putting a bigger hitch on the car or not. I don't know if it would be a liabilty issue for them or not.

I agree G3, I don't see any reason not to go with a class II hitch.  Not that I'll ever pull that much weight but it gives me more options.

I have my sights set on this Hidden Hitch brand hitch.  Looks like installation doesn't require much effort (no drilling, no modification to the existing bumper).
