Low Power/Thrust from MinnKota 40 PowerDrive

Featured Replies

Went out on the Upper Potomac this AM and my TM had no guts! It was fully charged but acting as though it was at least 2/3 drained. Checked for fishing line wrapped around the shaft. There was some but the problem persisted even after I cleared it (no more power than before). Any ideas?

Might be the foot pedal. My old power drive would go through one pedal a year and that was on of the things it would do. The board in side of it get dirty and sratched, and it doesn't want to work right. One time it would only turn right, other only had high speed, other would only run at slow or fast no in the middle. You can get one from Minnkota they used to be around $70. I got rid of that motor, got tired of buying a new pedal each year,

You need to change all the seals.  If fishing line got in it, there is a good chance that the seals are toast, and just providing extra friction, and no water protection.

Thanks for the responses.  the battery is about a year old.  Seems to still be charging and holding a charge but I'll take a harder look at it.

As far as the pedal...hmmm...that might be it.  The throttle slider won't kick in until about 7 (on a scale of 10) or so so it could be the board.

I opened it up...nice and dry inside.  Cleaned out all the line but it does seem to have some still in between the prop shaft and the washer it passes through.

Obviously the increased friction due to any line still stuck in there could also be why the power is down and the motor doesn't even start turning until 7 or so.   Not sure how to pull that out as there was no obvious way to separate the prop from the washer.  Any help with that?
