Troubleshooting my trolling motor

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have a late 90s motor guide 54lb thrust trolling motor on my boat.  I was fishing with my brother one day and it all of a sudden stopped working.  We just figured it was the charge, so we charged it and it still wasnt working.  All the other electronics/other things hooked up to the battery all work, so we know its not a battery issue.

My question is where do i begin and where should I look to start trying to find the problem with the trolling motor?

1. Make sure the TM battery connections are tight.

2. If you have a circuit breaker at the back of the boat in the engine compartment by the batteries, check to make sure it hasn't kicked.

3. If the TM has a circuit breaker on the foot pedal, make sure it hasn't kicked.

4. At this point, use a voltmeter or circuit test light to see if you're getting 12V. up to the TM foot pedal. If you aren't, you've got a problem between the batteries and the TM pedal. If you are, you've got an issue with something on the pedal or the TM itself.

Without knowing your setup it's difficult to troubleshoot beyond that.
