SuperLine hook?

Recommended Posts

Just getting into fishing soft plastics and I have been using Gamakatsu EWG hooks. Today at the store I saw Gamakatsu SuperLine hooks, what are they and in what situations would you use them? If it matters I primarily fish Suffix 832 40lb braid.

They are a beefed up version of what you are using.

Designed for heavy cover .... won't straighten them out.

Does that make them "superior"? Are their situations where the "normal" ones would be a better choice?

The Superline hook is heavier, which will affect your baits "Rate Of Fall" .... Not always a bad thing.

Their Primary purpose is to get fish out of Heavy Cover (Grass, Wood etc.) with a tighten down drag.

Does not make them better, they have different applications.

They are also intended for "Super Line" as in braid.

If I am only using braid "should" I use these types? Or would the normal ones be just fine?

Superline or "standard" EWG will work with your braid.  I use Superline models to change the fall/glide of some baits without having to deal with a weighted hook or weight on the line.  Superline hooks are a bit heavier.  If you were in some THICK stuff with heavy cover, then you might want to invest in a pack for that.

The Superlines hooks I’ve purchased have the opening in the eye of the hook closed off. I used to have a problem when using offset or EWG hooks and the thin, 8-10 lb braid I use where the line would slip off the hook in the gap of the eye. I at first thought the line broke but upon examination, I found the entire knot was still intact. I now only buy the superline hooks.
