Which bow mount TM for 14’

Featured Replies

Building a 14’ aluminum right now, trying to decide between which motor to throw on the front. I’m between a motor guide x3 70lbs with 50” shaft and Minn Kota maxxum 70 with 52” shaft. They seem to be just about identical on paper, but the motor guides about $200 cheaper. Any input? Thanks

Also would a 70lb be way overkill? I figured it would be better safe than sorry but wasn't sure.

On a 14' jon boat there is no need for a 70# plus trolling motor unless you are in a lot of wind/current.  I used a 28# for many years just to ease along.  A 45# should be plenty.  I used a single 27 series deep cycle battery and it easily lasted all day long.

My opinion, specially if used in an electric only lake: 70lb is awesome, 55lb is minimum I'd bother going. You'll be more efficient with the 24v system (and smaller gauge wire runs, which is nice).

I think my 14' jon got #36, 12V and can last me 6-7 hours no problem. I never drain up my deep cycle battery, but I have 15hp outboard at hand.

For you I agree with @CaptPetefor 24V system and maybe 45-50# to get where you want faster and don't have to worry about battery run dry.

Down side of 24 volt system is you have to buy 2 expensive batteries instead of 1.  My 16.5 foot deep V has a 12 volt 54lb trolling motor and  works for me.  The only thing I regret is I should have gotten a longer shaft for choppy water conditions.
