carb question

Featured Replies

My next door neighbor has a 96 cajun bass boat with a 140 suzuki motor on it. He recently bought it and has had problems with the motor dying on him in the water. He found out that the jets are oversized and have been choking the motor. How much would new ( proper ) jets for a MIKUNI ( brand new ) carb cost. I am guessing the jets installed on the new carb are the wrong size for the 140 motor. Neither one  of us know a whole lot about motors and I am trying to get an estimate for him. I figured some of you guys are mechanics. Thanks in advance.

Most suzuki outboard Motor repair shops should have what you need, Also check Suzuki Motorcycles shops as the Mikuni carb was used on more than just outboards (Suzuki Cars have then too that are not fuel injected of course)

Here is a Link to the Mikuni Web site. Hope this help

How do you know that the jets are to Big? You stated that either of you do not know much about motors. The 115hp and 140hp Suzuki's are almost the same, but the 140 has bigger jets. I have a 75hp suzuki and that is the only differance between the 75 and 85 HP.

Suzuki motor cycle shop will not be any help. I have stopped at many many shops and the motorcycle  and boat motors don't use the same things and most will not service the other.

when you say its dying on the water. What do you mean? when you put it in gear it shuts off, maybe? if that is it. the jest are not to big the just need adjusted and new plugs ( make sure they are NKG plug. suzuki's do not run good on any other brand and the right type). My 75 did this when I used different plugs and the carb where out of adjuztment. put the right plugs in and a little playing with the carbs and it ran great.

I have been running suzuki's for over 15 years in an area that doesn't have any suzuki ( outboard)shops.closest is 4 hours away. if You need parts and there are no dealers close by. try browns point mariena  google it and their web site will come up. they are the best

Tis a rather confusing post there.

First, neither of you knows much about OB motors.

Then he "finds out" the jets are oversized for that particular carb on that motor.

Then you're "guessing" that the jets are oversized......???  huh??

How did he find out if the jets are oversized and if he found out that they were from someone who knows what they're talking about, why are you just guessing that's the problem?

OB motors from the 90's on became more complicated to work on for the average backyard OB motor mechanic.  In your guys case, neither of you have any idea what you're doing.  I'd suggest taking it to a Suzuki dealer before you guys start spending a bunch of money chasing a problem that may be due to nothing more than simple carb adjustments first.

Yup, be careful.  If you have no idea what you are doing, either start reading a tech manual or take it in.  If you choose to read up on the subject be d**n sure you understand what you read.  You don't want to chunk your powerhead and get hit with a $3000+ repair bill in the name of experimentation.

Geez Now i feel bad for trying to answer this members question. Yea they said they didn't know squat about OB, but hey you have to cut your teeth some where if you want to learn. And to me it seames as thought these two were willing to have a hand at getting that OB to running right after they were told by a Third Party that the jets on the carb were the wrong size

I was also going on the premiss that he was only shoping for the correct size jets to get an estimate on what a set of jets for the Motor's carbs should cost so they (him and his next door neighbor) would not be taken by some Mech that was just out to make a buck
