Prop Question

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I currently run a 16ft bass boat with a 2006 Merc 115 hp two stroke swinging a 20 pitch Lazer II ss prop.

I hit 46 mph gps at 5700 rpm. The rev limiter just starts kicking in at wot, so I am slightly under propped. I have been able to source a 20 pitch high 5 prop and would like to know what I could expect?

SA dealers do not let you test props before purchase I'm afraid.

The high 5' are not speed props but are meant for helping with lift.

What is your hole shot like?

What is the Max. RPM range for your engine?  I'm not familiar with Mercs since I am an Evinrude man. What is your 'Power Rated @' RPM?  That is the RPM at which you have all of your horsepower available, and you won't get anymore.  Mine is at 5500, but I run a 200hp motor on my Skeeter.  Your's may be lower or higher.

Also, what kind of bass boat is it?  Glass or Aluminum?  Deep V or Improved V?

I spent a lot of time this past summer tuning my boat to get speed and holeshot out of her.  I finally bolted on a Shooter 4 Blade SS Prop 13 1/4 X 25 on her, and completely trimmed out my max RPMs are 5600.  On GPS I run between 74 - 78 mph on a calm day.  That's pretty impressive for a 21 foot boat, but I just had to test prop after prop.   I'm fortunate to have a dealer around that keeps a handful of test props on hand.

There is a calculator you can use.   Here is the link.......  http://www.rbbi.com/folders/prop/propcalc.htm

That'll get you in the ball park.
