Advice on my old rod and reel

Featured Replies

I'm new to bass fishing and am awaiting the arrival of my new rod and reel; a Daiwa Tatula and a 7' mh dobyns fury. In the mean time I found my old rod and reel which is a Shimano Stradic 5000fi spinning reel on a Shimano Teramar inshore spinning rod 7'mh.

I had not used it in over 10 years, so I cleaned and lubed the reel and replaced the line on it with power pro 50 lb braid with Barkley vanish fc leader.

My question is: how well is this set up going to perform bass fishing until my other gear arrives? I know the reel is big for bass being a 5000 size. I'm planning to use a Texas rig or spinner bait with the set up. Any advice on other baits that would perform better with this rig?

I mean, you can do alot with it... you aren't limited very much being that it's spinning. No reason you can't throw Texas or Carolina rigs on it, spinnerbaits chatterbaits swimbaits... all should do ok on a MH inshore rod.

Get rid of the Vanish leader though. Use almost anything else, just not Vanish.
