Maine early fall fishing lures.

Featured Replies

Hi, in early September we are planning on going to Maine. We have a cabin on great moose lake. Great moose lake has crystal clear water and we were wondering what the best lures would be for that time of year to catch bass? Also what would be the best trailer for a pumpkin seed swim jig for that time of year?

I can't speak on the specific body of water but I can share what works for me in the very clear gravel pits I fish.

I have had lots of success with Texas rigged senko type worms, 5" finesse worms, and flukes.  Lower light(morning, evening, or cloudy days) conditions call for topwaters, spinnerbaits, and if vegetation allows, shallow to mid diving crankbaits.

I like a lot of muted colors in these pits, such as green pumpkin, brown, black, black/red... although white seems to work well in almost all conditions for me, especially for the flukes.  Bluegills are the primary forage so those imitations work well too.

As far as the trailer goes, I always just try to match colors with the color of the jig, or maybe slightly contrast.  That's an ongoing experiment for everyone.

Biggest LM we've ever caught ( 7.1 ) was in mid September on a t- rigged Senko in 6 ft of water.

Can't go wrong with keitech trailers. I have also used big hammer swimbait tails. I like them alot. Have been pretty durable for me as well. Check them out. Lots of colors to choose from and priced well.

For me clear water means swimbaits. I fish big swimbaits with heavy gear. But smaller ones work as well. Clear water = bass can see well (including you). So be stealthy. Can mean everything between a 2lber and a 5 or 6lber. You don't need to move as much water so finesse tactics can be great. Being a new to you body of water (depending on your electronics availability) you will want to cover water. So swim jigs, swimbaits, spinner baits etc. If there is a lot of vegetation pick that apart with worms (I would go big) and creature baits and jigs. Good luck I hear it's a great lake with some good fish.
