I am new to the bass fishing world and bought my 1st baitcaster this year and did fairly well with it so I am going to get a couple more baitcaster. I do a lot of frog fishing and am going to buy a designated frog setup. I have decided to get a dobyns 735c for this. My question is .....what should I do with my current rod and reel combo? It is a 7'6 veritas mh with a 6/1 reel on it. Was thinking of putting 17lb mono on it and using it to throw spinners and buzz baits?. The veritas Mh are a little stiffer than most other mh.

I think it would be solid for bottom contact type stuff like jigs and Texas rigged plastics.   The reel may be a little lower retrieve speed than I would prefer but plenty of people use a 6 speed for those techniques and like it.

 

You could also totally use it for spinner baits and buzz baits.  The Veritas is on the stouter side of medium heavy IMO, but a decent rod that can do a lot.

 

What other techniques do you typically use?

I do mostly jigging, spinnerbaits, and buzzbaits...for jigging I like to use braid si maybe use 30lb braid on that combo and use for jigging? Is 7'6 too long of rod for that? Or should I throw mono on it and use it for spinners and buzzbaits? 

Rod is not too long.  Many prefer over 7' for jigs.

A lot of people prefer somewhere in that length range of rod for bottom contact stuff.  It would make pitching slightly more difficult to me but like I said, some prefer the longer length for pitching.  I have a couple  of setups with 30 pound braid, but I prefer 50 lb with a leader for nearly everything.

 

I just find it easier to see the line with 50 lb and experience less line dig.  Heck, I use bright yellow braid with a leader on both my bottom contact rods.

 

Truth is, I feel like a lot of anglers(me too) may be getting slightly too tunnel visioned on specific rods for specific techniques.  Of course properties of a rod will make it more favorable for some lures and techniques than others, but IMO there ain't a whole lot that a med-heavy fast rod can't do.

 

I'd throw some 50 lb Power Pro and a 10 foot 15 lb test mono leader on that setup and use it for whatever you need it to do.
