I am sure this has been covered but I am ready to throw some larger cranks for the fall bite and I would like to limit getting bit off as much as possible. I fish waters that have both large pike and muskies. What do some of you guys use for a leader? How long? What knot do you tie? 

I use single strand steel leaders that I make myself in waters where bite offs are common, especially on crankbaits. 

   I use Eagle Claw Micro leaders. They come in 8"and 12", 12, 18 and 27 lbs.  I use the 8" with great success, but I don't throw cranks to pike. I throw spoons mainly, and a few inline spinners. I notice fish hit those further back than cranks, so you might want to go with the 12" length. I also tried South Bend Invisileaders. The quality wasn't as consistent as Eagle Claw. Not bad exactly, just not as good. I personally don't like single strand leaders, but  know people who do. Try 'em. I don't use expensive leaders because of snagging. I would think snags are less of a problem with crankbaits.   jj

With cranks, I go with longer leaders because, for some reason, pike like to get them back in their mouth and I've had them bite of shorter 12in. leaders.  I can't tell you what brand I use, but I will tell you they are made with quality ball bearing swivels and cross lock snaps. The last thing you want to happen is loosing a fish and your lure because the snap on your leader opened.
