Better seats/benches for my Canoe?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

New to the forums.  I just got a 17 ft. fiberglass canoe, and got a little trolling motor on the transom.  Nice little boat, but the seat is horrible, made of 4-  1 1/2 inch slat boards spaced about 1/4 inch apart.  Spent the day sitting on it, and 3 days later, my tailbone is still sore.  This, even after padding it with a folded towel and life preserver.  The bench is probably just too small for my rear end!  ;D

Does anyone have a good idea to get a comfy chair in there?  I was thinking about one of those low sitting lawn chairs, but I think they are too wide.  Or maybe one of those folding tripod type chairs you see people use on Golf Courses, but I would probably have to cut the legs to sit low enough to not lose balance on casts...

Any ideas would be great!

thnx!

I once had plywood cut slightly wider than the rails, resting on top of the rails, fastened with jury-rigged clips, and a throw cushion for padding. It was about 5 or 6 inches higher than the factory seat and much more comfortable. It didn't make it any more tipy for me or any of the passengers I had.

and welcome to the forums.

same situation here, but i took a couple of foldable stadium seats from walmart and the fit on my canoe benches perfect. i zip tied them in so now they even stay on going down the road.

The part that i found to hurt me was how low the seat was to the floor.  I couldn't get my feet under me without bringing my knees to my chest.  This made my tail bone into an arrow pointed right at the seat.  If I extended my legs out flat then my back would bend too much.  So I built a seat above the seat.  The extra 5 or 6 inches made a big difference for me.
