I live here in VA, I bought a 1970 14' Sears Fiberglass boat from a farmer for 50 bucks. I got a bill of sale, but he said that he did'nt have a title. The boat also as far as I know has never been registered or title in this state. Also has no HIN on it. All I have is the model number from Sears. How do I go about getting a title for this thing or am I just screwed. Any help would be appreciated. P.S. I don't think they had HINs until 1973...please correct me if I am wrong

Not true on that Hin at leat not for my little 1432 I have a Jon that is a 1965 model that Has a HIN on it...

I have look at vgif and it says somewhere in there that if the boat has never had a HIN due to age or homebuilt that they will issue one.

Same here in texas.  If no Hin was issused.  in texas you can take it to the Game TPWD and they will inspect and issue you a HIN

CGH-  Anyone could have got your boat a HIN at anytime.  They where just not assigned automaticaly when you bought boats until later on.

SDS- Here is Canada where I am there is a lot of boats that have no titles.  Hully Gully where I am which is a "toy Store" often sell their used boats with no titles.  And out on the water they often never check for it and if they do then a bill of sale will cut it.  But they usually wont pull you over here unless your careless or something or they are looking for that same type of boat or motor that has been stolen. So the best bet would to be if there is one go on www.kijiji.com and post an add in your area and find out the rules or craigslist under boats.  and/or call your local minstery of transportation and ask them.  Also you can call the local police and ask them to run the serial number as you are looking at "buying" it and there is no title and you want to make sure it is clear before you purchase it and they will run it all for you.
