Fish finder for float tube?

Featured Replies

Those who are tubers...

What fish finder are you using and how do you like it?

Right now I'm looking at the Hummingbird Fishing Buddy and the Hummingbird PiranhaMax 215PT.

Anyone using these or something else, i'd love to hear some recommendations and/or reviews. This will going on a Fish Cat 4 and would like it to be relatively cheap (<$200) and give accurate readings. I do NOT want to use of the things you have to cast out. It must have a screen with temp/depth/fish readings.

Let me know what you are using and how you like it.

Im using a Pirahnamax 215 Portable but in a Kayak and so far I really like it. I even used it on the ice this past winter. The only downfall I have found with it is the battery life isnt as long as I would like.

I've been tubing for years and it has always been my opinon that in a tube you have to kick your way to a spot so you might as well cast and let your lure find the fish. Yoy have the perfect opprotunity to make a million cast, so there is not much water you will miss. My point is if there fish there you will find them.

I am probably going to buy the Humminbird Fishin Buddy 130 which has the SideScan capabilitiy to identify/locate fish in the direction it's pointed out to the side and a higher resolution than the 120 model! I've done a LOT of research on this issue and was considering a Garmin 140, Cuda 168, Cuda 242, Cuda 245, Humminbird 525, Fishmark 320, Lowrance 86X, and the PiranaMax series. I like the Fishin Buddy 130 the BEST of all. It's not color, but who cares. It can spot fish up to 120' away in front, in back, and to the sides. Now that's impressive. You might want to check them out. They are in the $200 - $210 range and should be an EASY mount on my new H3 Freestyle float tube/kick boat when it arrives. I also like the fact that it is SELF-CONTAINED with NO wires to run and it carries/works on 6 AA batteries inside the unit. Just my opinion:o)

UPDATE 5/8/08:  I just now ordered the Humminbird Fishin Buddy 130! It has all the features that I wanted in a fish finder AND it's so portable. I'll post a review as soon as I get and use it on my H3.

I bought the Fishing Buddy II in 1999 and used on a float tube for years. I liked it. I'm sure they have improved in the last nine years.
