I have a hand held I keep in the boat. I only use it when I am on the Delaware River below Trenton, NJ. It is just used to listen to the other larger ships to listen to what they are doing and to call if I need help in the middle of the shipping channel. Other than that no one else where I fish uses one. I have tried to get people to use at gatherings on lakes and stuff.

I too carry a handheld. It's only useful when I go on Lake Erie. The weather on the lake moves REALLY fast and in a small rig like mine it's REAL easy to get into trouble. It's mostly for piece of mind tho. Since I don't have a horn, it can be useful to call for bridges on the cuyahoga river to allow for passage. As a bonus feature most will have the NOAA weather channels, although I rely on instant radar on my phone, as well as watching weather reports before I go out.

Never hurts to have one.
