10ft Jon Boat - Power Recommendations Needed

Featured Replies

I just picked up a mint 10ft Jon for $20 (friend's father passed away). Any suggestions as far as TRANSOM mounted power (i.e. electric/trolling motor) - brand/thrust etc... It will be used primarily on small to medium sized lakes and ponds - no current/tides to contend with.

Thanks much!

The most powerful one you can afford. When I had a 10' jon boat, I used a 24V bow mount foot controlled trolling motor. I put the batteries in the back and ran wires to a front electrical outlet wired for 12V and 24V to plug in the motor and electronics. Any brand is OK, all have their problems. A 36" shaft model is the best fit if you can find one-I used an OMC and still do on my 12' jon wired the same way.

Congrats on the new boat. I would go with a 55# thrust. I think it's the biggest pound thrust you can get 12volt which is one battery. I wouldnt want more than that on a 10 footer. Both TM companies have strong followers so that will be a decision you need to make.
