Who knew a little spring could cause a big problem

Featured Replies

I had been having a problem with my 91 Merc 40hp, where after a couple of outings during  long runs it would go from doing about 30mph to only doing about 8. I would change out the fuel pump diaphrams and it would be back in business. I did this a couple times over the last couple of years, I lived in New Mexico until I moved to Arkansas last summer, so I didnt take the boat out much due to high gas prices and the long distance. Any way, I have been able to take my boat out more here, and discovered the motor started acting up after just having changed the diaphrams in Oct, so after some thought and seeing if they even made the fuel pump for my engine any more I kept coming across the fuel pump rebuilding kit, which I had already purchased two. I realized that I didnt need to change out the diaphrams but the spring with the cap in the fuel pump. I could feel a difference with the springs just by feel, I replaced the spring and put the pump back together. When I pumped the primer bulb I already noticed a huge difference in how quick it pumped up. It started right up without any throttle movement.

So I guess if there are two points to this story

1. Its amazing how the little things can make such a big difference

2. If its in a kit maybe you should replace it when you are replacing the other parts.

I would have to say lesson learned.

That's why they put them parts in their.  Besides you already paid for them might as well used them
