Need some advice on new boat.creating an auto livewell

Featured Replies

I just got a 1971 EBBTIDE 14 foot fishing boat and I have a a few things I want to do with it.

First, does anyone know where to get a a nice steering wheel for cheap? I just want something that has a single bolt in the middle of the wheel and is comfortable.

2nd, my boat has a live well that is very standard. All it has is a drain plug that you pull and let water flow in. I want to upgrade it so that all i have to do is flip a switch and water will come in.

What I am thinking is drilling a hole in the side of the live well and attaching an aerator that pulls water from a hole in the back of the boat and dumps it in the live well, then perhaps having an overflow drain. Does anyone have any better ideas? I would like to devise a way to pump the water out by at the end of the day. also, if the aerator is attached to an open water source, will it prevent water from seeping in if i is not turned on? basically if it is turned off do i need to worry about water still coming in the live well and do you think a float switch would be a good idea for making it turn off automatically?

If anyone has any advise or experience they could lend to the situation i would greatly appreciate it!!! thanks

Water will pass through an aerator pump and fill it till it reaches the outside water line whether the pump is on or off.  You could put a plug into the livewell opening to stop it and pull it when you want water but a better system would be:

Disconnect the existing line going to the bottom of the livewell from the pump and connect to a new connection you've drilled higher up the livewell with one of those aerator heads installed.  Now the water won't fill unless you turn the switch on plus you can now put a timer on the pump to aerate the water.  The old livewell connection at the bottom can be used as a drain. line to the outside,  put a one way check valve in the line to keep the water from flowing back into the system.  Finally, add a thru hull connection somewhere up the side of the livewell as an overflow, this line can feed out the side of the boat (above the waterline obviously  :)  ) or you could simply put a Tee in the drain line you've already installed and route it to there.

Now you've got a nice functioning livewell that's more than tournament ready.
