I just moved to southern Chesapeake, VA and the nearest body of water is the Northwest River. I fished it 2 weeks ago and to my surprise, it is a dark stained body of water that is wind driven, not tidal. I’m used to fishing upper peninsula water. Needless to say, I got skunked and started doing my research. 

Tomorrow morning I plan to throw dark colored worms (senkos, TX rigged purple culprit worms, a black buzz bait and an assortment of dark colored jigs)
 

I weather is gonna be sunny and hot, with a high of 97 later in the day. I’m planning on fishing tight to cover and any shadows I see. 
 

Any other suggestions for me? I have a lot of learning to do when it comes to this tannic water.

You sound like youre good to go. The water is usually stained so gold is a good choice along with a ned rig. l got my citation bowfin there and there are some trophy bass and cats to be found too. The water gets really muddy like chocolate milk at times too. Also, you might want to get your NC license as lots of good fishing in Tulls Bay. if you like chasing gar, there's plenty of those bad boys in there too. Good luck!

I would suggest dynamite for starters. Then follow up with electrical wires in the water and shock the areas a few times.

 

If you think there are any bull sharks in the water you can throw the Woody for some great action with a lot of noise.

 

A casting net thrown from the bank can produce good results.

 

And don't forget those Louisiana style crab nets with some turkey necks soaked in bacon grease overnight. They will attract all types of water critters including alligators, gars and water moccasins.
