pedestal stuck

Featured Replies

I'm trying to replace a pedestal in my boat but I can't get it out of the base.  I put it in a vise and am able to turn it with a pipe wrench, but I just can't get it out.  Anyone run into this?

Try putting some penetrating oil on and let soak for a while.  More than likely rust holding it.

I've had the same problem. The only solution I found was to remove the base plate from the deck. This involved cutting the carpet to get at the mounting bolts/screws, then banging the base off the post which I secured in a vise. If you are careful with the carpet it glues back in place and can be barely seen.

No amount of penetrating oil worked for me, and heating it enough was out of the question.

I've a real stubborn one up front.  I can twist it out with a bunch of elbow grease.  When removed, I use fine emery sand paper on the base hole and on the O.D. of the pedestal.  Wipe clean and I'm good to go for a couple of months.

i used to have the same problem, i was always able to get mine out by twisting and pulling at the same time while it was still attached to the boat. Once you do get it out i would put some neversieze lubrcant on the shaft and in the base. My pedestal hasnt gotten stuck since i used it. goodluck hope this helps

Id say you should probably spray some pretreating rust preventative or at least a lubricating oil in there to keep that kind of stuff from ever happening.... but now that is has you need to try something good that actually penetrates.. not the normal OTC WD40 or anything.  There are acouple of industrial products I have used called FREE and PENTROL that work very well.  You might also try hitting it and vibrating it to break any seals it has formed.  Not sure that heating would even help.  Just spray it, let it soak, turn it 1/4 with wrench, spray some more and let it soak and it should come out if a good oil is used.

If you can find it KROLL penetrating oil is the best I have found.  Mostly industrial use.

I found Kroil on eBay, but they want like 60 bucks a gallon.  I don't need that much.  I'll hit a local hardware store and see what they have.
