Stowaway Marine Dual Purpose Battery (edited)

Featured Replies

I'm looking at getting a new set of batteries.

Academy Has their Stowaway Marine Dual Purpose Battery on sale for $57.99.

And their Stowaway Marine Deep Cycle Battery on sale for $79.99.

Was wondering if anyone had any experience with using this brand of battery.

Here specs on the battery's that I'm looking at:

Stowaway Marine Deep Cycle Battery Pro Series

* 750 marine cranking amps

* 600 cold cranking amps

* Weight: 54 lbs.

Stowaway Marine Dual Purpose Battery

* 730 marine cranking amps

* 575 cold- cranking amps

* Weight: 55 lbs.

I recall that one of the members of this board works for academy maybe they will pop in and give us the skinny on this batter brand.

Thanks for any and all replies

Hello?

Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone at home?  >;)

Are you using it for starting or a trolling battery?

Starting batteries are selected for good CCA.  I've no idea what Marine Cranking Amps means but it is perhaps Warm Cranking Amps.  So for starting higher CCA gives more short term amps for starting an engine.

But if you are using it for a trolling motor battery, CCA is bad.  To get high CCA they have a large surface area and thin plates.  For trolling you don't need the amps but you want thick plates so they will last for hours.  The specification you are looking for in trolling batteries is AMP-HOURS.  In general deep cycle batteries will have lower CCA and more amp-hours but try to find the actual specification.

"Dual=purpose" suggests it is a compromise and may not be the best for trolling but still should be OK for starting and instrument loads.

Don't look at CCA, means absolutely nothing to your trolling motor. Look at the amp hour capacity, it the Dual purpose does not have the Ah capacity, look at the reserve minutes. I think you will find the Dual purpose to only be 160 minutes and the trolling 205 minutes. That could give you almost another hour fishing time if just easing around.

I HAD a stowaway. Had 1 full season plus a little on it. I always charged it up properly etc. Even put it on a battery maintainer this winter. Took the boat out 1 time this year and the battery died. I would never buy another.
