free new battery ,missing some acid, savable.

Featured Replies

hi,  my buddy gave me a brand new exide marine battery from his store that came delivered on its side with some of the acid leaking out im no expert but was hoping since the battery has never been charged if i put acid back in  will this work ?and also is there a ceratin amount acid to distilled water ratio  that goes in the cells or just acid. thanks '.

I think as long as it is not cracked and leaks the acid it should be fine. I let the batery in my bike dry up and all I did was to refill it with electrolite I got at the auto parts store. no mixing just straight in there.

It is important that all cells in the battery are matched so if you find you have to replace acid, use a hydrometer to match the density fairly closely.  Try and match it to the existing density in cells that didn't leak.

Then before the first use, do an equalizing charge using a charger that will get it up to about 15 volts for 30 minutes.  This will make bubbles in the acid that rise and stir it up to prevent stratification of the acid/water you add.

After equalizing I would again check the density of the cells to check they are fairly close.
