Best place to mount an onboard charger?

Featured Replies

I have a Champion 17'6" dual console bass boat. Where should I mount my charger? Directions are a little vague, should I go ahead and mount it in my gas tank/battery space or somewhere else? That's the only area that is vented but the batteries and gas tank concern me. Any better ideas or am I overthinking this thing?   lp

Where else would you mount it?  Most chargers only have 6' leads.

If  it is an actual onboard charger, it is explosion proof .... that's part of what makes them expensive ..... mount it with your tank and batteries ....

I would definatly mount it on your boat somewhere...  ;D ;D ;D

Sorry I couldn't resist

But seriously, mount it in your battery/tank compartment. This will more than likely keep it easily accessable and out of the elements. As a extra precaution though I prop my compartment lid open while chargeing if it is in a safe location to help with any venting issues that may arise, but typically if you don't there are no issues.

Depends on your boats design and lay out. My 20' Champion has separate compartments for batteries and charger. Two batteries in a port side compartment and one battery and charger in a starboard side compartment. The gas and oil tanks are in the center compartment along with pumps and plumbing. Bassboats are not all the same....................Al

I mounted my onboard charger under the console of my alluminum tracker. Reason #1 space limitations in the battery / fuel tank compartment.   #2 manufacture recomends open space around the charger for cooling purposes.  I lengthend the leads for the battery and snaked them in under the deck to the compartment.  I also lengthened the 110  connection. I ran that forward / under the deck to a receptacle on the trolling motor plug receptacle panel at the bow. I love the convienance of the connection and it works great.
