ALX Enox vs St Croix LegendX comparison

Featured Replies

I wanted to give a review here for anyone thinking of either of these rods. I just purchased the ALX Enox and prior was curious how it would do compared to the St.Croix Legend X I've been using all summer. I live in Maryland and fish about 3x a week and would consider myself a slightly above average fisherman. Here are the rod specs, both casting rods:

ALX Enox Medium Heavy 1/4-7/8 oz lure, 7'1"   $320

St. Croix Legend X: Medium 1/4-5/8 oz lure, 6'10" $430

While not exactly the same rod, they are fairly close in specs. Both rods had a Shimano Curado 70 reel with the same Invizx line. I took them out and fished only these two rods for several hours switching every 10 casts or so. I went to the Upper Potomac and fished rocky shorelines and docks. I used the same lure on both rods also, a tube on a 1/4 oz jig. I've been using the Legend X all summer and am fairly familiar with the rod specifically with lure selection so the Enox was brand new to me. For starters, both rods are great. Both very light and versatile. I caught the same amount of fish on both rods and I would say they felt very similar in my hand and had very similar characteristics while catching fish and the sensitivity to bottom structure. When it came to casting, I preferred the feel of the Enox but only by a slight margin. It was slightly smoother and accuracy was the same. When it came to pitching docks, if I were pitching along side a dock (parallel), the rods were the same. If I were trying to pitch up under docks, I was doing better with the Enox. I believe that was due to M vs MH though and not really the rod. So in the end, if you are wondering if the Enox is a good as the Legend X, I would say yes, definitely. If anything maybe slightly better. Here is what I would think moving forward, if I were going to choose 1 rod over the other I would get the Enox because is is $110 cheaper.

The next day I fished both rods with the same lures but different reels. On the Legend X I had the Shimano Curado 70 which I've had on there all summer, on the Enox I put a Shimano Aldebaran 31 MGL (Japanese versions of the 51 MGL). Here is where the rods separated from one another. The Enox came alive! It was all in the Aldebaran (which I was using braid and a leader). The Enox was lighter due to the reel and I could pitch under docks like I've never been able to before. With the same reels, the rods are basically the same but with the Aldebaran against the Curado it was night and day. Hands down the best set up I own. I did a lot of research before purchasing the Enox and even spoke to Alex the owner of the company and felt confident that it would be a good rod and man it's awesome with the Aldebaran. Here is my final thought if I were to get another rod/reel: I would buy the less expensive Enox b/c it's almost identical to the Legend X and pay up for the Aldebaran any day of the week. In the end my LegendX/Curado setup costs the same as the Enox/Aldebaran set up b/c I purchased the Aldebaran from Japan on eBay but the performance definitely goes to the Enox/Aldebaran.

If anyone was wondering where the Enox stacks up against competitors, you now have a good base line. I hope this helps someone making a decision.

The new enox does not get the recognition it deserves. It holds its ground in comfort and sensitivity with many rods in the $400+ range imo.

Try the BMJ too. Been loving it for my swim jigs recently.
