Johnson 150 Idling problem

Featured Replies

I have an "04 Johnson 150 that was new in 06.

The thing will idle perfect when its cold.  Once it gets warmed up and its idling if you touch the throttle it coughs and dies.   A few people told me it sounded like it was "sucking" air into the fule line.  So I replaced all the fuel lines from the tank to the carb, including the primer bulb and the fuel filter.

Am I in for some big repair bucks?  The thing runs great once you get if up to 2000rpm.   :)

Nope...Im afraid you will have to purchase a mercury 150 :)

Seriously, Im no outboard mechanic, but

Have you ever changed the spark plugs?

How old is the gas?

There could be issues with the timing or ignition.

Waytoslow knows the Jonnyrudes so Im sure he will give you better

information.

Hope you get it sorted out.

Trst me, if I had a dollar for every time I wished it was an Optimax I would have enough for a new Merc. ;D

Yeah, plugs are new and gas new and treated.   But thanks for the insight and thoughts.

It started doing this last year.  I should have had it checked out over winter but most of the places around here shut down once deer season starts and now they are so darn busy I don't want to be without my boat while they take forever to fix it.

Aghhh, thats what I get for procrastinating :'(

I would start by checking the idle mixture adjustment, if they get lean that will cause it to lean spit and die. From there I would clean the carbs. The emulsion tube in a carb or two may be cloged. This will cause a severe bog and possibly die when you put the gas to it.

If any of the recirculation valves go bad, they will also let it load up or if a hose going to them leaks, they can cause it to lean spit and die.

Figure on about $500 to have the carbs rebuilt and a couple of hundred if it's the recirc valves/hose.

One note, if it was an Opti-Pop, good chance you would already have replaced the powerhead.

Hey Way2, thanks for the help!

I hope your first assessment is correct since it seems the least expensive.

Now that you mention that, I spoke with the dealer where I purcased it(which is now about 250 miles from where I live since I moved) and he thought it might just be out of adjustment too.  I should have just towed it out to him last fall and it would be fixed by now.

In any event, at least I have an idea of what to expect when I take it in.  Thanks again! :)
