Learning Topwater...Why Did I Break Off 2 Buzzbaits?

Featured Replies

I've been slowly working through different types of lures.  Tonight I tied on my first buzzbaits.  It was awesome!  I got bit within seconds - small fish.  Then the problems began and I started spewing money.

I'm using 20 lb braid with a palomar knot.  I was throwing a 3/8 warpig/wareagle whatever it is with a 3.something Keitech. When I got hit by a second fish, it broke off instantly (felt bad for him...).  I figured I messed up the knot somehow, but it's the only knot I tie and I haven't had any other problems in the past.  I tried again with a Booyah Squelcher and at one point backlashed a bit hard and zoom it went off the line.

Does anyone know what's happening?  Is 20 LB braid too thin, or is it slipping or something?  I've been using fluoro leaders on my T-rigs and swimbaits.

Also, bonus question - I used a Keitech on the war eagle.  I have another one that has a trailer hook.  Do you use a trailer when you have a trailer hook?  Seems like it would not work...

Yes. It's probably digging into itself, and snapping when it "catches"

What lb do you recommend?  I got that size from a chart here.
