i got a trolling motor in the minnkota 55lb thrust and its got 7 or more positions but the low end is still too fast in some situations and iw as just wondering if anyone jerry rigged a variable switch to change some settins. im sure it would void the warranty but it maaaaaaay be worth it. thanks to all bass boat techs

It would take a way bigger pot than you could ever fit in the motor.  Even if it was only pulling 2 amps at the low setting, it would take a 25 watt resistor to keep the pot from going up in smoke.

Is the motor a transom or bow mount?

Minn Kota used to sell a device called (if I recall correctly) a digital maximizer that did what you want.  They discontinued it several years ago and started including the technology in some of the Maxxum line of trolling motors.

I am getting a 55 Maxxum digital Tuesday.  Anyone want to come help me install it?

you might consider carrying a 6 volt battery and switching to it for slow work. It will cut your slowest speed in half, and that may be enough.

I think the Maxximizer is only rated for about 30 amps so he would have to disconnect when he started adding much more than about half power. It does have overload protection with a red indicator but I wouldn't want to depend on that to save it everytime.

However, they are great for what you are wanting to do, you just have to remember no to over power it.  I have one I've been using since they first came out in the mid 80's on an old MinnKota 28 (also from the mid 80's) and still one of the best buys I ever made.
