Add gas lift for hatches

You have to do a little per-planning before you just buy and bolt on.  The length and pressure has to be pretty close to what's needed.  Too short and they won't open far enough, too long and they won't close.  Too high of pressure will make them hard to close or they open up on their own, to low of pressure and they won't hold the lid open.  The pressure is going to be determined by the weight of the lid and where on the lid it is place.

I usually figure out what I need and either go to one of the auto parts stores that carry them or order them on line.  They are usually listed as gas springs.

They weren't new installs, but I just replaced 2 of mine yesterday. One was the center tackle compartment and the other was the left side rod locker. Both were 10" and I replaced with 45 lb. I found on Amazon. They work perfectly.

If you're talking about adding gas springs to hatches that don't have any, you're going to need to do some measuring to get the right spring length, stroke length and spring strength.  You'll also need to closely examine the type of mounts they come with and the shape and style of your hatches.  Even after all of that, you'll probably have to do some trial and error to find the right mounting locations.  A gas spring calculator like this one will help tremendously in narrowing down the right springs.

I added one to an aluminum hatch and found that a single 10lb spring was enough to open the hatch and hold it open:
