Waterproofing trailer taillight wiring ?

Featured Replies

Is there any need to waterproof the splice connector for trailer taillight wiring? I have some waterproof electrical tape, should I use that? This is for a new pair of submersible LED taillights. Thanks.

I would. Any time there is a break in the wire that is prone to getting wet. Cheap insurance if you ask me. Besides better to have an not need. Than to need an not have it.

Use shrink tubing.

And solder wires.

shrink tubing or use di-electric grease on the fittings, di-electric grease keeps the wiring from getting wet, use it on my four wheelers as well when i drive them through streams.

NAPA makes things for that called "cool-seal self sealing butt splice."  They work great.  All you do is crimp them on and they seal.

I used those waterproof splices then the waterproof electrical tape and never had a problem.

THE best sealing of connections is with liquid tape after soldering the slice. Any other method including water resistant splices or water proof tape can and will let in water at some point because they dry rot due to ozone, heat, or wetting. Shrink tubing has the fastest breakdown time when exposed to the outdoor environment especially being wet. The liquid tape will last as long as the wire insulation and is as flexible.

Wayne, can you provide a website for the liquid tape?
