Re: Speedometer question

Featured Replies

Its possible I guess that maybe there is some restriction but not where I can see it. I may need to pull the pitot tube completely out and re-route it. I took it off and blew through it and it seemed clear but I'm lost at this point.

If yours works correctly count your blessings. I know of none that do. A good GPS will tell the tale, and by the way is the number one factor in killing the top end speed of a boat.

One of the most useless instruments on a typical boats dash.  That along with the trim gauge.

I agree completely but since it's there I want it to work correctly. I guess I'm a little anal about things like that.

I think the point is that it won't work correctly. None of them do. You might get it to register some number, but it won't be correct. 90% chance it won't even be remotely close. When mine actually shows anything it reads 30 mph when the gps reads 65mph.  Sometimes it reads 80 mph when I'm going 30mph. Has done that since the day I bought it 3 whole months ago. Never had a boat that was even close to accurate.

Oddly enough, the pitot tube speedometer on my old 1989 Tracker agreed very closely with my GPS speed.  That said, it's very easy to foul a pitot tube.  I no longer bother looking at the speedometer on my console.  I use the GPS information provided by my Lowrance units.
