The team approach to kayak fishing

Featured Replies

Fairly new to kayak fishing.  Now I'm getting out there with kids and a neighbor.

I am sure lots of folks fish with a partner as a "team" - fishing same spot with different presentations, fishing different spots nearby, taking off to explore and fish two different spots.

Who fishes with a buddy with the goal of narrowing down patterns and finding active spots quickly?

Any tips for optimizing fishing with a partner?

Thanks guys.

I fish with my two sons on kayaks. Last year I had the only fish finder, but this year they'll each have their own so that will be new.

Generally I'll paddle around the lake and they'll go ask me what interesting spots I found that hold fish. I imagine we'll likely do the same thing a bit next year with all three of us.

We float the river as a family. Quiet, peaceful, drift along with slow current. Wife asks what to throw so I tell her a Zoom fat albert grub, case beaver, fat baby craw, all on a split shot rig. I'm over here throwing everything I own and she's wearing me out. That's fine, she's happy and fishing and it gives me a chance to see what else might be working.

My fishing buddy targets pan fish and I go after bass.

That will be awesome.  I can imagine that will be a good approach for us, too.

I have a Garmin striker and will set my son up with a "Deeper" fishfinder.  They aren't too fancy but they effectively show water depth, cover, hard bottom areas, and sometimes fish.

I think it will be a fun and effective way (sometimes) to both find productive areas and get on patterns more efficiently than doing it alone.

My plan is to work together with him to narrow down the location of ledges, points, and submerged roads, and to try out different tactics to narrow down what the fish want.
