Fenwick hmg travel casting rod

Featured Replies

Hello fellow anglers,

Looking at picking up a two piece or travel rod for family trips when a one piece just won't work.

I have my choices narrowed down to a two piece BPS Carbonlite 2.0 6'6" M-f, possibly a Berkley lightning rod 7'0" M-MF, or a Fenwick HMG travel casting rod 7'0" M-F and MH-F, it's a 3 piece rod that comes with an extra tip section. This option seems super versatile and comes with a travel case.

Does anyone have experience with the fenwick? Curious is the M-F has a soft enough tip to fish squarebills? Or if the reel can stay attached to the rod and stored together in the case?

I was originally debating the spinning model, but I tend to prefer casting lately. I can't find the carbonlite in stock and the lightning rod may be a bit too soft as it's moderate fast. I will be pairing this rod with either a Curado K with 14lb mono or a SLX MGL 70 with 10lb mono.

Thanks everyone for your time and opinions.

I have the fenwick and I like it, although I don't fish it much anymore since I got a truck and can fit one-piece rods.

The case it comes in sticks out where the reel would be, so it should work that way.

I think you'll be fine with the MF tip on squarebills, in my case just about everything gets thrown on the MH tip, it's a little softer than many anyway.

edit: I ended up buying it in spinning too. Same deal - decent rod, super portable, nice to have two tips although I mostly use the lightest tip on it.
